Cerrejón Chooses Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) from
All Weather, Inc. for Coal Mining Operations
Advanced AWOS combines high reliability meteorological sensors with state-of-the-art
communications technologies for even most challenging environments
Sacramento, CA (October 4, 2004) All Weather, Inc., a leading
manufacturer of high accuracy, high dependability weather information systems
and meteorological sensors, today announced that Cerrejón LLC,
an integrated coal mining operation in Columbia, South America, will take
delivery of two Series 900 Automated Weather
Observation Systems (AWOS). Located at Cerrejón's Maicao "La
Mina" and Portete "Puerto Bolivar" airports, the systems will
measure and report wind speed, wind gusts, wind direction, relative humidity,
temperature, visibility, precipitation, altimeter setting, density altitude,
cloud height and sky condition, present weather, and lightning-all essential
data for the safe and economic operation of the airfields. Up-to-the-minute
information will be provided in one of two ways. A voice-synthesized report
will be transmitted via VHF radio with a discrete frequency to ensure approaching
pilots have the exact weather conditions. In addition, voice data reports
will be made available by telephone so that current airport conditions can
be obtained from anywhere prior to departure.
"Cerrejón is dedicated to the exploration, production, transportation,
and shipment of high grade coal located in mines throughout a large portion
of northern Colombia," stated Captain Saludos Cesar Vesga of Cerrejón
LLC. "After careful consideration, we chose All Weather because of the
accuracy and reliability of their equipment as well as the hands-on experience
of their team in Columbia. The vagaries of the environment can make or break
the success of a new installation. All Weather's partnership with local integration
firm and AWI representative Acerta made this the right choice."
AWOS: Automated Weather Observation System
All Weather's Series 900 AWOS is based on
state-of-the-art sensor technology and a powerful, microprocessor-based computer
system that collects and processes large amounts of environmental data. Whether
the concerns are precipitation, wind gusts, temperature, present weather,
or lightning, the end result is a cost-effective system that provides the
power and versatility needed to stay on top of rapidly changing weather. The
AWOS is expandable, easy to install, and
easy to maintain.
The Series 900 AWOS features All Weather's
8364-E Dual Technology Visibility Sensor, a patented four-head design
that ensures accurate measurements independent of the effects of the environment.
The 8364-E combines the transmissiometer's ability to measure direct transmissions
in harsh conditions and the forward scatter sensor's ability to measure varying
density and scatter functions. Unlike traditional two head visibility sensors,
the AWI 8364-E can measure fog, snow, rain, haze, smoke, dust, and sand.
AWI's AWOS system meets the stringent standards
of the major international aviation agencies, including the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA), International
Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),
World Meteorological Organization (WMO),
and Transport Canada. All
systems measure and report essential weather information and include full
Remote Maintenance Monitoring capabilities to ensure continuous monitoring.
